December's wind clawed at Boisjoli, a razor of ice and snow. Light bled from cottage windows, a weak defiance against the encroaching gloom. Garlands of holly, brittle and lifeless, clung to doors. Christmas was a ghost haunting the village, its spirit choked by a leaden sky that had wept only gray for three days. Time itself seemed to hold its breath.

Elara stood on the threshold of her grandmother's workshop, hands jammed deep into wool pockets. Her braid, a tangled knot of brown, caught snowflakes like frozen jewels. She scanned the unending horizon, her gut a knot of dread. At sixteen, the youngest witch in the Winter Guild, she felt the ancient magic of Boisjoli pressing down, a weight of ages.

"Lost in thought, little one?"

Isadora's voice, a soft iron, startled her. Her grandmother approached, leaning on a hazel staff carved with frost runes. Her eyes, pale as winter skies, held Elara's with a tenderness edged with fear.

"I don't like this gray, Grandmother. It's like the day refuses to end."

Isadora nodded, a crease of worry deepening on her brow. "Come. I must show you."

They crossed the workshop, a chaos of vials, dust-choked tomes, and dried mistletoe. Wax and peppermint hung heavy in the air. Behind a crimson velvet curtain, a dark wood chest, inlaid with silver, waited. Isadora laid a hand on the lid, and a frigid light pulsed from within.

"The Winter Jewel," Elara breathed, her own breath catching.

She’d seen it only once, at the Equinox. A swan's egg of pure light, it held the seasons in balance. Without it, spring would never come. Eternal winter would descend.

Isadora lifted the lid. The chest was empty.

Ice flooded Elara's veins. She stared at her grandmother, seeking answers, but Isadora’s face was ashen.

"Stolen," Isadora whispered, her voice cracking. "This night. I don't know how. The wards were untouched. The stone is gone."

"Who? How?" Elara’s voice was a raw cry.

"The Jewel’s power draws covetous eyes. But the thief knew our defenses. Someone close, Elara. Someone with access."

The words struck like a physical blow. Elara thought of the other witches, her friends, Lucas, the boy with hazel eyes who always helped with the Yule potions. Could a traitor walk among them?

"What must I do?" Her voice trembled, but her resolve hardened.

Isadora gripped her shoulders, her gaze fierce. "Find the Jewel before Christmas Eve. Three days. Fail, and the sun will never rise on Boisjoli again. Eternal night. The Winter magic, lost forever."

Elara swallowed, the dryness in her throat a physical ache. Three days. So little time. "Where do I start?"

"Ancient texts speak of the Ice Guardian, keeper of the Jewel's source. The thief may have sought its alliance, or its deception. Go to the Heart of the Wood, where snow never melts. Confront the beast. It alone can guide you."

The Heart of the Wood. A place whispered about, feared. Frost wolves hunted there. Trees spoke in forgotten tongues. The Guardian, a colossal stag with crystal antlers, could freeze a mortal with a glance.

"I’m not strong enough," Elara whispered.

"You are stronger than you know. The Jewel’s magic flows in your veins. You are the only one."

Isadora produced a silver pendant, a star etched with runes. She fastened it around Elara's neck. "This will shield you from the Heart's chill. It belonged to your mother."

Elara touched the cold metal, a gentle warmth spreading through her. Her mother, a powerful witch, had died when she was a child. Few memories remained, but the pendant felt achingly familiar.

"I'll leave at dawn," Elara said.

"No. Now. Every hour is precious."

Elara nodded, swallowing a sob. She embraced her grandmother, then grabbed her pack, already prepared, as if Isadora had foreseen this moment. Provisions, a vial of warming potion, an old grimoire.

Outside, snow fell thicker. The village slept, huddled around hearths. Elara moved swiftly towards the forest's edge. Flocon, her snow-white fox familiar, bounded to her side, amber eyes bright with intelligence.

"Let's go, Flocon. We'll save Christmas."

The fox nudged her hand, then darted ahead, a white streak in the fresh snow. Elara followed, her heart pounding. The forest welcomed her into its hushed embrace, the only sounds the snap of branches and the wind's sigh.

An hour in, doubt gnawing at her direction, a voice called out.

"Elara! Wait!"

She spun around. Lucas burst through the trees, breathless, a dark cloak slung over his shoulders. Snow dusted his brown hair. He carried a walking staff.

"Lucas? What are you doing here?"

"I saw you leave. Your grandmother told me everything. I'm coming with you."

Elara hesitated. Lucas, a friend, always ready to help. But her grandmother’s words echoed: Someone close. She searched his face for deceit. Only worry and genuine resolve met her gaze.

"It's dangerous, Lucas. The Heart of the Wood…"

"Exactly. You won't go alone. I know these paths better than anyone. And I owe you. You saved my mother last winter."

Elara sighed, torn between suspicion and gratitude. Finally, she nodded. "Alright. But if I tell you to run, you run. No questions."

"Deal," Lucas grinned.

They pressed on, Flocon scouting ahead. The forest thickened, trees twisting, branches heavy with ice. A blue light filtered through the canopy, casting the place in an unearthly glow. Elara felt the pendant pulse against her skin, a silent guide.

Suddenly, a deep rumble shook the earth. Trees swayed. A colossal silhouette emerged from the gloom. Two icy eyes, vast as moons, ignited in the darkness.

"The Guardian," Lucas breathed, his voice strangled.

Elara clenched her fist, magic surging through her fingers. The quest had begun. Nothing would ever be the same. Yet, a flame of hope burned within her, brighter than the encroaching cold.

"Stay behind me," she told Lucas. "And whatever happens, don't look away."

The crystal stag advanced. Snow swirled around it, a dance of frost. Elara planted her feet, ready to face her destiny.
