Their path leads them through a dark, foreboding forest. Strange sounds and unseen eyes watch their every move. Harald's resourcefulness is tested as they navigate the treacherous terrain.
The canopy overhead was a tangled net, woven from branches that clawed at the bruised twilight sky. Each rustle of leaves, each snapping twig, seemed to amplify the silence that pressed in on Harald and Lia, a silence that felt less like an absence of sound and more like a deliberate suppression. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, decaying wood, and something else, something acrid and unsettling, like old fear. This was the Whispering Woods, Old Man Hemlock had called it, a place where the trees themselves held secrets, and the shadows stretched long enough to swallow unwary travelers whole.
Harald kept a hand on the hilt of the worn hunting knife he’d brought from the farm, its familiar weight a small comfort against the gnawing unease that prickled his skin. Beside him, Lia walked with a quiet grace, her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, now narrowed, scanning the dense undergrowth. She clutched a small, carved wooden bird, a trinket from their childhood, her knuckles white.
“Do you hear that?” Lia’s voice was barely a breath, yet it cut through the oppressive quiet.
