The air hung thick and humid, a cloying blanket that clung to Harald’s skin as he pushed through the overgrown path. The dense foliage, a riot of emerald and shadow, pressed in on either side, the rustling leaves an incessant whisper that seemed to mock their slow progress. Lia walked beside him, her brow furrowed, her gaze sweeping the tangled undergrowth as if searching for a hidden enemy. The letter, its ancient crest a faded promise of something more, felt heavy in Harald’s tunic, a constant reminder of the life they’d left behind and the uncertain one they were stepping into. The familiar scent of damp earth and decaying leaves was a poor substitute for the comforting aroma of freshly tilled soil, and a knot of unease tightened in his stomach.

“Are you certain this is the way, Harald?” Lia’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the quiet. “It feels… wrong. Like we’re walking into a trap.”

Harald stopped, pulling a thick branch out of her path. “The letter spoke of a hidden path, a way only those who knew the old ways could find.” He didn’t voice the nagging doubt that gnawed at him. The old man who had given them the letter had been as cryptic as the parchment itself, his words a riddle wrapped in a prophecy. “He said to trust the signs, and the path is the only sign we have.”
