With a mix of apprehension and determination, Harald and Lia pack meager belongings. They leave the farm, their only clue a faded map and the lingering mystery of their family's past.
The straw rustled beneath Harald’s worn boots, a familiar sound that had been the soundtrack to his life. But today, it was a hollow echo, a reminder of a world he was leaving behind. Beside him, Lia’s hand, usually steady, trembled slightly as she adjusted the strap of her meager satchel. The parchment, brittle with age and filled with the faded ink of a forgotten scribe, lay tucked deep within Harald’s tunic, a constant, heavy presence against his skin. It was their only map, their only guide, and the only tangible proof that the life they knew was a carefully constructed lie.
“Are you sure about this, Lia?” Harald’s voice was rough, a stark contrast to the gentle breeze that whispered through the tall, dry grass. He looked at her, his sister, her face etched with a resolve that belied her years. He saw the flicker of fear in her eyes, a mirror of his own, but beneath it, a burning ember of determination.
Lia met his gaze, her own eyes, the same deep hazel as his, shining with an unusual intensity. “We have to be, Harald. We can’t stay here, pretending. Not anymore. Not when… not when we know.” She didn’t need to finish the sentence. The knowledge, unearthed from the dusty chest in their forgotten attic, hung between them like a shroud. A kingdom. Their parents. A legacy stolen.
