The faded ink on the parchment seemed to writhe under the flickering lamplight, each loop and flourish a silent accusation. Harald traced a particularly intricate symbol, a knot of serpentine lines that seemed to coil with a life of its own. He’d spent countless hours poring over the cryptic message, his brow furrowed in a perpetual state of bewilderment. Lia, usually so quick to unravel any puzzle, sat beside him, her own gaze fixed on the document, a strange, distant look in her eyes. The familiar scent of woodsmoke and hay, once a comforting blanket, now felt suffocating, a stark contrast to the wild, untamed possibilities the letter hinted at.

“It speaks of a ‘shadowed crown’,” Harald murmured, his voice rough with disuse, as if the words themselves were foreign on his tongue. “And a ‘broken oath’. What does it mean, Lia?”

Lia finally stirred, her fingers brushing against his as she pointed to a passage. “Here, Harald. ‘The blood of the Sunstone flows through you, though it has been long suppressed.’ Sunstone… I’ve never heard of such a thing.” Her voice was a whisper, barely audible above the crackling fire.
