The shattered remnants of the usurper’s banner lay trampled in the dust, a stark testament to the swiftness of the shift. The air, moments before thick with the metallic tang of fear and the desperate cries of battle, now hummed with a different sort of energy – a nascent, vibrant hope. Harald, his breath still ragged, his muscles screaming with the aftermath of exertion, stood at the heart of the unfolding spectacle. He had expected a fight, a desperate struggle for survival, but this… this was something else entirely.

Around him, the townsfolk, who had cowered behind shuttered windows and bolted doors for so long, began to emerge. Tentatively at first, like shy woodland creatures drawn from their burrows by the promise of sunlight, then with a growing boldness. They carried no weapons, no banners, only the unvarnished expressions of faces long etched with hardship and quiet despair. Their eyes, however, were fixed on Harald, on the raw courage that had flared so unexpectedly, on the quiet strength that had felled the usurper’s champion.

A woman, her face weathered like old parchment, stepped forward, her hand reaching out as if to touch him, then faltering. “He… he is gone?” she whispered, her voice cracking with disbelief.
