The wind, usually a gentle caress across the fields, now carried a chill that spoke of more than just the changing seasons. It whispered of unease, of eyes watching from the shadows, of a predator sensing its prey moving too close. Harald felt it first, a prickling sensation at the back of his neck as he mended a fence, the familiar rhythm of his hammer strokes faltering. Lia, beside him, paused in her task of gathering herbs, her brow furrowed as she scanned the distant tree line.
"Something feels wrong, Harald," she murmured, her voice barely audible above the rustling leaves. "The air is heavy."
He nodded, his gaze following hers. The forest that bordered their small, ever-growing haven had always been a place of quiet sustenance, a provider of wood and game. Now, it felt like a coiled serpent, its stillness a prelude to a strike. Old Man Hemlock, his face etched with a wisdom that seemed to predate the very stones of their hastily fortified settlement, had warned them of this. "When the roots of power are disturbed," he'd said, his voice raspy as dry parchment, "the branches thrash." They had disturbed those roots, Harald knew, by daring to exist, by gathering the scattered embers of loyalty, by speaking the name of their rightful lineage.
