Harald, his sword slick with sweat and something darker, parried a vicious blow, the force of it jarring his arm to the bone. He could feel Lia’s presence beside him, a small ember of warmth in the encroaching darkness, but he couldn't afford to look. Not now. Not when the usurper’s guards, clad in the grim, black armor that had become the kingdom's curse, pressed in relentlessly.
They had been cornered. The carefully laid plans, the whispers of rebellion they had nurtured in the hidden village, had fractured under the sheer, brutal force of the usurper's retaliation. Old Man Hemlock, his face a mask of grim resignation, had urged them to flee, to scatter, but Harald could not abandon the people who had dared to believe in their cause. And Lia… he couldn’t imagine leaving Lia.
A hulking guard, his face a brutal landscape of scars, broke through Harald’s defense, his axe whistling towards his head. Harald twisted, the blow grazing his shoulder, but the impact sent him staggering back. He saw Lia’s eyes widen, a flicker of something he couldn’t quite decipher – fear, yes, but also a strange, focused intensity.
