The air in the forgotten wing of the crumbling manor hung heavy with the scent of dust and decay, a stark contrast to the crisp autumn breeze that rustled the leaves outside. Harald, his brow furrowed in concentration, ran a calloused finger over the faded inscription on a tarnished silver locket. It was identical to the one Lia wore, a small comfort in this labyrinth of secrets. Beside him, Lia, her eyes sharp and observant, carefully unrolled a brittle scroll, its edges threatening to crumble at the slightest touch. They had found this hidden chamber by following a cryptic clue left by Old Man Hemlock, a passage concealed behind a loose stone in the library hearth.
"This sigil," Harald murmured, tracing the intricate pattern on the locket, "it's the same one etched into the royal seal on this decree." He held up a parchment, its wax seal remarkably intact, depicting a soaring falcon. "The decree that banished our father from court, branded him a traitor."
Lia nodded, her gaze fixed on the scroll. "And this," she began, her voice hushed, "this account… it speaks of a sudden plague that swept through the capital. It claims our parents succumbed to its wrath, leaving the throne vacant for the 'wise and capable regent' to assume control." Her voice cracked on the last few words, the injustice of it all a bitter taste on her tongue.
