The air in Old Man Hemlock’s solitary cottage hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and the quietude of forgotten things. Outside, the wind sighed through the skeletal branches of ancient oaks, a mournful prelude to the revelations that swirled within. Harald sat, his calloused hands clasped, the rough wool of his tunic a familiar comfort against the prickle of unease that had begun to bloom in his chest. Lia, ever perceptive, watched him, her dark eyes mirroring the apprehension that flickered in his own. Hemlock, his face a roadmap of a life lived in shadow, stirred the embers in the hearth, the glow illuminating the deep lines etched around his eyes.
“You wish to know more,” Hemlock’s voice was a low rumble, like stones shifting in the earth. It wasn’t a question. “About your parents. About why you are here, not in the gilded halls of the Sunstone Palace, but tending fields with calloused hands.” He paused, letting the weight of his words settle. “Your mother, Elara, was a woman of fierce spirit and unwavering grace. She possessed a wisdom that shone brighter than any jewel.” He looked at Lia, a faint smile touching his lips. “You have much of her in you, child.”
Lia offered a shy nod, her gaze fixed on the dancing flames. Harald found himself leaning forward, the farmhand’s life fading into a distant memory. “And my father?” he prompted, his voice barely a whisper.
