The air grew thin, each gasp a testament to the arduous climb. Harald, his muscles screaming in protest, pushed onward, the rough wool of his tunic chafing against his sweat-slicked skin. Behind him, Lia’s steady breathing, though strained, was a comforting rhythm in the growing silence of the mountain. Old Man Hemlock, his gnarled staff a familiar silhouette against the bruised twilight sky, led the way, his movements surprisingly agile for one so aged. Below them, nestled in a vast basin carved by ancient glaciers, lay a city. It was grand, undeniably so, its structures reaching skyward with an ambition that spoke of immense power and artistry. Towers of gleaming white stone pierced the fading light, their spires glinting like polished bone. Wide avenues, paved with stones that seemed to absorb the last vestiges of daylight, snaked between imposing buildings. A river, a silver ribbon in the gloom, flowed through its heart, its banks lined with what appeared to be noble estates, their gardens still clinging to a semblance of their former glory.
