The air in Old Man Hemlock’s small, smoke-filled cottage hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and unsettling. Outside, the wind howled, a mournful dirge that seemed to echo the disquiet settling in Harald’s gut. Lia sat beside him, her fingers tracing the worn patterns on the wooden table, her usual bright spark dimmed by a creeping apprehension. They had spent the better part of the day poring over the faded texts Hemlock kept hidden, each word a shard of glass reflecting a kingdom they barely recognized, a history twisted and buried.

“It’s not just the King, is it?” Harald finally broke the silence, his voice a low rumble. He looked at Hemlock, whose eyes, rheumy with age, seemed to hold a universe of secrets. “The letter mentioned a ‘power behind the throne,’ but these scrolls… they speak of whispers, of shadows moving in the court long before the King fell.”

Hemlock nodded slowly, his gaze fixed on a point beyond the flickering candlelight. “The Usurper’s rot did not begin with a single act, boy. It was a slow poison, seeping into the very foundations of the kingdom. Loyalty was bought, dissent was silenced, and fear became the currency of power.” He paused, his hand reaching for a gnarled wooden staff that rested against his chair. “What you must understand is that the Usurper’s reach is not confined to the castle walls. It extends further than you can imagine, like the roots of a blighted tree, reaching into every corner of this land.”
