The air in the cramped community center, usually thick with the scent of stale coffee and the hum of earnest conversation, now thrummed with a different kind of energy. It was the nervous anticipation that precedes exposure, the sudden awareness of being watched. News crews, a flock of metallic birds with blinking red eyes, had descended. Their presence was a tangible weight, pressing down on Elara and Kae, transforming the familiar space into a stage.
Elara smoothed down the front of her simple cotton dress, her hands a little clammy. She’d rehearsed this a dozen times in her mind, whispering Davis’s words like incantations, but the sheer volume of lenses, the expectant faces of the reporters, threatened to scatter them like startled birds. Beside her, Kae stood with a practiced calm, their gaze steady, a subtle defiance in the set of their jaw. They had navigated the choppy waters of public opinion for years, but this, this felt like a new kind of baptism by fire.
“Remember,” Kae murmured, their voice a low rumble against the rising din of microphones being extended, “we’re here to talk about why this matters. Not just the who or the what, but the soul of it.”
