Chapter 8
A Lesson Learned
Nishane realizes that by observing and trying, he solved the mystery of the wilting flower. He learned that plants need care, just like friends do.
Nishane watched the little flower, his heart swelling with a quiet kind of joy. It wasn't just a flower anymore; it was a story, a puzzle he had helped to solve. He remembered how sad it had looked yesterday, its petals droopy and its leaves looking tired. He had felt a little discouraged then, a small knot of worry in his tummy. But Ammi’s words, like warm sunshine, had chased that feeling away: “Always seek knowledge, Nishane. The world is full of answers, waiting for curious eyes to find them.”
And he had sought. He had watched the sunbeams dance across the garden, noticed how the earth felt dry and thirsty. Then, he had remembered the watering can, its spout like a friendly little duck’s beak, and how he had gently poured cool water around the flower’s roots. It was such a simple thing, really. But seeing the flower now, its face turned towards the sky, its petals a vibrant splash of color against the green leaves, made it feel like the most amazing discovery in the world.
He knelt beside it, his grubby knees sinking slightly into the soft soil. He gently touched a petal, marveling at its velvety texture. It felt cool and alive. “You were thirsty, weren’t you?” he whispered to the flower, as if it could understand. He imagined the water seeping down, down, down to the roots, like a long, refreshing drink after a day of playing. He thought about how Ammi always said to water the plants, and how he had sometimes forgotten, or thought it wasn’t that important. But now he knew. Plants needed water, just like he did after a game of chase with Lily. They needed care.
