Her shoulders were hunched, as if perpetually bracing against an invisible storm, and her hands, clasped tightly in her lap, were pale and trembling. Sarah’s heart ached with a sudden, sharp pang of empathy. This was not a casual seeker of advice, but someone adrift in a sea of profound sorrow.

“Thank you for seeing me, Sarah,” Clara’s voice was a fragile whisper, barely audible above the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall. “I… I don’t know where else to turn.”
