The scent of dried lavender and something earthy, like damp soil after a spring rain, always clung to Elara’s small cottage. It was a comforting aroma, a stark contrast to the musty, parchment-laden air of the basilica’s scriptorium, and it seemed to seep into the very wood of her home. Thomas sat by the hearth, the fire a flickering dance of orange and gold, its warmth a welcome balm against the chill that had settled deep in his bones after his hasty retreat from the shadowed alleyways of the village. Elara moved with a quiet grace, tending to a pot simmering over the flames, her movements economical and sure.
