The afternoon sun, usually a gentle caress through the stained-glass windows of the basilica, now seemed to cast long, accusatory shadows. Thomas, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs, scrambled through the labyrinthine passages beneath the nave, the faint scent of damp stone and old parchment clinging to him like a second skin. Behind him, the echoing thud of heavy boots grew closer, a relentless, terrifying rhythm. He clutched the worn leather pouch containing the fragments of the manuscript, its weight a reassuring, yet perilous, burden.

Brother Matthieu’s voice, a low, guttural growl, cut through the oppressive silence. “He cannot have gone far. The boy is clumsy, even in his haste.”

Thomas pressed himself against a cold, rough-hewn wall, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He pictured Brother Matthieu’s face, the stern lines etched around his mouth, the unwavering, almost fanatical glint in his eyes. The man was a ghost made flesh, a sentinel of secrets, and Thomas, with his insatiable curiosity, had become a stone in his carefully constructed edifice.
