The biting wind whipped Thomas’s cloak around him, a meager defense against the chill that had settled deep in his bones. He hadn’t dared return to the basilica, not since Brother Matthieu’s unnerving gaze had followed him from the cloister. Some whispered she was a witch, others that she was touched by an ancient wisdom. Thomas, in his desperation, found himself drawn to the latter. A different kind of knowledge, perhaps, one that might illuminate the cryptic lines he’d found.
