The scars, a jagged map of her betrayal, still burned with a phantom heat, a constant reminder of the maid’s venomous touch and the husband’s icy finality. Yet, in the quiet solitude, a different kind of awareness began to bloom.

It started subtly, a faint nausea that coiled in her stomach, a peculiar tenderness that bloomed in her chest. At first, she dismissed it as a lingering effect of the fall, the trauma her body still struggling to process. But the symptoms persisted, growing more pronounced, more insistent. One morning, as the physician, a man named Elias whose hands were as skilled as his heart was kind, prepared her daily poultice, Aurelia felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. She clutched at the edge of the rough-hewn table, her breath catching in her throat.

Elias, his brow furrowed with concern, set down his tools. “Are you unwell, my lady?” he asked, his voice a low rumble of genuine care. He still called her ‘my lady,’ a courtesy she hadn’t corrected, a small anchor to the life that had been ripped away.
