The air in the hidden chambers of the palace was thick with the scent of old parchment and the faint, metallic tang of fear. Elara, once Aurelia’s shadow, now a figure of chilling authority, moved with a predatory grace through the dimly lit corridors. Her fingers, adorned with rings that glinted like chips of obsidian, traced the intricate carvings on a tapestry depicting a triumphant king – a king who bore a striking resemblance to Valerius, her current master. It had been eight years since she’d last seen Aurelia’s face, that naive, trusting mask she had so brutally shattered. Eight years since she’d watched the princess tumble into the unforgiving abyss.
A soft knock echoed, breaking the silence. A young page, his face pale and drawn, bowed low. “My lady Elara,” he stammered, his voice barely a whisper, “the King requests your presence in the west wing.”
Elara’s lips curved into a slow, cruel smile. Valerius. Always at the center of the web, pulling the strings. She inclined her head, a gesture of mock deference. “Inform His Majesty that I shall be there anon.”
