The air in the hidden chamber was thick with the scent of dried herbs and forgotten secrets. Aurelia, cloaked and with her face obscured by shadow, traced the intricate carvings on the stone wall. Each symbol seemed to whisper a forgotten name, a lost promise. Beside her, Lysander, the physician who had saved her life, adjusted a flickering oil lamp, its meager light casting dancing shadows that seemed to mock the darkness within her. For eight long years, she had lived in the quiet solitude of his secluded cottage, her existence a carefully guarded secret, her heart a frozen wasteland. The vibrant princess who had once graced the palace halls was gone, replaced by a phantom, haunted by the ghosts of her past.
“You’ve been quiet tonight, Aurelia,” Lysander’s voice was a low rumble, a comforting sound in the oppressive silence. He had witnessed her pain, her grief, and the slow burn of her fury. He had offered her sanctuary, but he could not offer her solace. That was a journey she had to undertake alone.
Aurelia turned, her eyes, still holding a spark of their former fire, met his. “I’ve been thinking, Lysander. About the whispers I’ve heard since returning to the city. About the whispers I’ve *felt*.” Since her return, a mere shadow of her former self, she had moved through the palace like a ghost, observing, listening, piecing together fragments of a puzzle that had shattered her life. The maid, Elara, had been the initial spark, the immediate target of her nascent rage. But Elara was merely a pawn, a sharpened blade wielded by a far more dangerous hand.
