The air in the servants' quarters was thick with the smell of stale wine and desperation, a potent cocktail that clung to the rough-hewn timbers like a shroud. Aurelia, cloaked and hooded, her face a carefully constructed mask of anonymity, moved through the labyrinthine corridors with the practiced silence of a phantom. Each creak of a floorboard, each distant cough, was a potential betrayal, a whisper that could unravel the delicate tapestry of her deception. She had spent weeks weaving herself into the fabric of the palace, a ghost in the halls of her former life, listening, observing, piecing together the fractured memories that had haunted her for eight long years.

Tonight, the whispers were louder, more insistent. Two guards, their faces flushed with drink and boredom, slumped against a tapestry depicting a forgotten hunt. Their voices, rough and slurred, carried on the night air.

“Heard the King was in a mood again,” one grumbled, his breath a foul gust. “Something about… old business. The Princess, they say.”
