Chapter 11
The Serpent Returns
Under a new guise, Aurelia infiltrates the palace. Her scarred face hidden, she moves like a ghost, observing the court that betrayed her.
The biting wind whipped at Aurelia’s cloak, a thin barrier against the encroaching chill of the approaching autumn. It was a chill that had settled deep within her bones, a permanent echo of the flames that had consumed her life. Eight years. Eight years since the world had shattered, since the face she’d once loved to gaze upon had been brutally marred, since the man she’d pledged her life to had cast her into the abyss. Now, she stood before the very gates that had once been her home, a fortress of gilded lies and poisoned whispers.
Her disguise was meticulously crafted. A simple, dark woolen gown, devoid of any embellishment, concealed her regal bearing. A heavy veil, woven with intricate patterns of shadow, obscured the upper half of her face, hiding the scars that still ached with phantom pains. Only her eyes, sharp and unyielding, were visible, scanning the bustling courtyard with a practiced gaze. They missed nothing: the swagger of the guards, the hurried steps of servants, the distant laughter of courtiers, a sound that now grated on her nerves like a rusty hinge.
She moved with a deliberate slowness, a stark contrast to the frantic energy of the palace. Each step was measured, each breath controlled. She was no longer Princess Aurelia, the naive girl who had believed in love and loyalty. She was Anya, a seamstress seeking work, a woman with a past as murky as the shadows she now inhabited. The story was simple, plausible, and utterly fabricated. A village girl, orphaned and alone, seeking a new life within the grand walls of the capital.
