The worn parchment, brittle with age, lay spread across the rough-hewn picnic table, illuminated by the flickering glow of a battery-powered lantern. Outside, the wilderness hummed with the unseen life of twilight, a chorus of chirps and rustles that had, until recently, been a source of unnerving silence. Now, it felt like an expectant audience. Arthur, his brow furrowed in concentration, traced a faded line with a calloused finger. The map, a relic unearthed from the dusty depths of the camper’s forgotten storage compartment, was less a clear guide and more a tantalizing riddle.

“It makes no sense,” he declared, his voice rough with a mixture of frustration and the lingering stress of their breakdown. “These symbols… they don’t correspond to any known cartography I’ve ever seen.”

Claire, her usual meticulous organization momentarily abandoned, leaned closer, her eyes wide. The anxiety that had been a constant companion since their engine had sputtered its last breath seemed to recede, replaced by a flicker of something akin to excitement. “But look, Arthur,” she said, her voice a soft murmur, pointing to a cluster of dots near a jagged representation of a mountain range. “This looks like the Three Sisters peaks, doesn’t it? The ones we saw yesterday, before… well, before everything.”
