The recycled air in the shuttle tasted like dust and regret. Outside, the nebulae swirled in a silent, cosmic ballet, indifferent to the turmoil churning within the cramped cockpit. Leo’s knuckles were white where he gripped the controls, the familiar hum of the engines a poor substitute for the steady beat of a heart that felt increasingly hollow. Joric’s betrayal had been a physical blow, a sickening lurch in his gut that mirrored the sudden drop in altitude they’d experienced moments ago. Anya, beside him, was a study in controlled panic, her usual sharp gaze clouded with a dawning horror.
"He… he just activated the override," Anya whispered, her voice barely audible above the whine of the straining engines. "Silas must have been monitoring us. Joric gave him everything, Leo. The coordinates, the bypass codes for the outer defense grid… everything."
Leo’s jaw tightened. He’d always been wary, always kept a piece of himself guarded, a lesson learned in the hard crucible of his past. But Anya, with her earnest belief and unwavering trust, had chipped away at his defenses. Now, seeing the pain etched on her face, the raw vulnerability beneath her historian’s composure, a fierce, protective instinct surged through him. He wouldn’t let Silas, or Joric’s cowardice, shatter this.
