Chapter 4
The Hidden Passage
Following a faint trail of unusual dust, Valerius discovers a concealed doorway behind a tapestry. It leads to a forgotten passage, suggesting Aurelia's departure was not a simple abduction but a deliberate escape.
The dust motes danced in the sliver of sunlight that dared to pierce the heavy velvet of the tapestry. Valerius, hunched low, traced the almost imperceptible disturbance in the otherwise immaculate floorboards. It wasn’t the clumsy scuff of a guard’s boot, nor the delicate tread of a lady’s slipper. This was something else, a faint whisper of movement, a trail of fine, unusual grit that clung to the fibers of his tunic. He’d noticed it first near the base of the grand tapestry depicting the founding of Eldoria, a subtle shimmer, almost like powdered moonlight. The royal guard, efficient in their panic and their search, had overlooked it, their eyes scanning for signs of forced entry, for the telltale drag marks of a struggle. They saw what they expected to see: a missing princess. Valerius, however, saw what was actually there.
He ran a gloved finger along the edge of the tapestry, the rich fabric cool and smooth beneath his touch. The dust was more concentrated here, clinging to the embroidered threads like a second skin. It wasn't the common grime of the castle, nor the fragrant pollen of the royal gardens. This was something mineral, something ancient. He leaned closer, his sharp eyes scanning the intricate weave. Beneath the depiction of King Theron accepting the crown, a section of the tapestry seemed to sag, just a fraction. A breath of air, cooler than the surrounding chamber, stirred his hair.
“Commander Thorne,” Valerius’s voice was low, a rumble that cut through the hushed anxiety of the room. Thorne, a mountain of a man clad in polished silver armor, turned from his interrogation of a trembling maid. His expression was one of barely concealed impatience.
