The flickering torchlight cast long, dancing shadows across the damp stone walls of the catacombs, illuminating the dust motes that swirled in the heavy air. Detective Valerius held the torch aloft, its orange glow catching the glint of determination in Princess Aurelia’s eyes. She stood before him, not the frightened royal his detractors had painted, but a figure of resolute courage, her simple tunic a stark contrast to the silks she usually wore, yet somehow more regal. In her hands, she clutched a thick, leather-bound ledger, its pages worn and brittle with age.
“This is it, Valerius,” she said, her voice steady, though a tremor of exhaustion ran beneath it. “The final piece. The proof that Thorne has been manipulating the kingdom’s trade routes for years, lining his pockets and crippling our allies.” She gestured with a slender finger towards a section of the ledger. “He’s been siphoning funds designated for the northern garrisons, diverting them to pay off his network of corrupt officials and, more disturbingly, to finance… other ventures.”
Valerius leaned closer, his sharp eyes scanning the spidery script and crudely drawn maps. He recognized the familiar scent of deception, a perfume he’d encountered too many times before. “Other ventures?” he prompted, his gaze never leaving the damning evidence.
