Elena’s small cottage, much like the village itself, felt like a relic from another time. The air inside was thick with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, a comforting aroma that usually settled my nerves. But tonight, with the wind clawing at the shutters and the memory of Mateo’s pale face still fresh in my mind, even Elena’s presence couldn’t entirely banish the chill that had settled deep within my bones. The key, heavy and cold in my pocket, felt like a lead weight, a constant reminder of the chaos it had unleashed.
She sat by the hearth, her face etched with the wisdom of years, her eyes, usually sharp and knowing, now clouded with a weariness that spoke of burdens I was only beginning to comprehend. Mateo had insisted I speak with her, his skepticism finally worn thin by the sheer impossibility of what we had witnessed – the way the fog had swallowed old Manolo whole, the chilling silence that followed, the utter lack of any trace. Elena was the keeper of the village’s stories, the one who remembered what others forgot.
“You found it, didn’t you, Daniel?” Her voice was a low murmur, barely audible above the crackling fire. She hadn’t seen the key, not yet, but I knew, with a certainty that defied logic, that she knew.
