The Stone Threshold
Deep within the woods, Daniel stumbles upon a massive, ancient stone door, overgrown with moss. It feels strangely familiar, resonating with the key he carries.
The air in the forest grew heavy, not with the scent of pine and damp earth, but with an oppressive stillness, a silence that pressed in on my ears. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig underfoot, seemed amplified, a jarring intrusion into this unnatural quiet. Mateo, bless his pragmatic heart, was still trying to rationalize the growing unease. “Just the wind playing tricks, Daniel,” he’d said, his voice a little too loud, a little too forced, as we’d pushed deeper into the woods, away from the familiar paths. But I knew it wasn't the wind. The whispers I’d heard, the prickling sensation on my skin, they were real. And the key, warm against my skin through the worn fabric of my shirt, pulsed with a silent, insistent rhythm that mirrored the growing thrum in my chest.
We’d been following a game trail, or what I assumed was one, more by instinct than by actual sight. The trees here were ancient, their branches gnarled and twisted like arthritic fingers, draped in shrouds of moss that hung like forgotten draperies. Sunlight struggled to penetrate the dense canopy, casting the forest floor in a perpetual twilight. It was the kind of place where shadows seemed to hold their breath, waiting.
Then, the trees thinned, and we stepped into a small, unexpected clearing. It wasn’t large, perhaps no more than twenty paces across, but what dominated it was something I’d never seen before, something that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. It was a door.
