The silence that descended upon the village after the night of the stone door was not a peaceful quiet. It was a strained, almost breathless hush, the kind that follows a violent storm, leaving behind a landscape irrevocably altered. The immediate terror, the spectral tendrils that had reached out from the abyss beyond the threshold, had receded. Mateo, pale and trembling, had been the first to acknowledge it, his voice a raw whisper against the dawn. "It's... gone. For now."
I stood by the riverbank, the same spot where the key had first gleamed in the mud, and the water flowed with its usual, indifferent murmur. But it felt different. The air itself seemed thinner, charged with a residual energy, a phantom limb of the darkness we had pushed back. The key, now cool and inert in my pocket, felt heavier than any stone. It was a constant, physical reminder of what lay beneath the surface, of the ancient secret I had disturbed, and, in a terrifying twist, had become its reluctant guardian.
Mateo found me there, his steps hesitant on the gravel. He still looked like a man who had seen a ghost, his eyes wide and unfocused, darting towards the trees as if expecting something to lurch from their depths. "Daniel," he began, his voice raspy. "Are you alright?"
