The air in the chamber was thick, not with dust, but with a cold, ancient silence that pressed in on my lungs. The light from my lantern, which had seemed so defiant only moments before, now felt fragile, a flickering candle against an encroaching abyss. The Guardian, or whatever name it answered to, had retreated, its fury a receding tide, leaving behind a stillness that was more unnerving than its roars. The stone door, now ajar, gaped like a wound in the mountainside, a testament to the force I had unleashed, and then, somehow, contained.
I stumbled back, my legs weak, the key still clutched in my trembling hand. It felt heavier now, not just in weight, but in its significance. It was more than just metal; it was a conduit, a key to something that should have remained locked away, buried deep in the earth and forgotten by time. The whispers, which had been a constant, maddening chorus, had finally fallen silent, replaced by the frantic thumping of my own heart.
Mateo found me there, slumped against the rough-hewn stone, my breath coming in ragged gasps. His face, usually so open and easy, was etched with a terror that mirrored my own.
