The Door Unlocked
Under a blood moon, Daniel inserts the key into the stone door. With a deafening groan, the ancient mechanism turns, and the door slowly creaks open.
The moon had bled its crimson across the sky, a celestial wound mirroring the unease that had settled deep in my bones. It hung like a swollen eye, casting long, distorted shadows that danced with a life of their own among the gnarled trees. The air, usually crisp and alive with the scent of pine and damp earth, felt thick, cloying, as if the very atmosphere was holding its breath. I stood before it, the stone door, a gaping maw in the side of the hill, its rough-hewn surface seeming to pulse faintly in the oppressive moonlight.
In my hand, the key felt impossibly heavy, its cool metal a stark contrast to the feverish heat that radiated from the door.
