The air in Elena’s small cottage hung heavy, thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and unsettling that I couldn’t quite place. It was the smell of secrets, I supposed, the kind that clung to old wood and even older bones. Outside, the wind had picked up, rattling the shutters with a ferocity that seemed to mirror the storm brewing inside me. Mateo had stayed behind, his skepticism a fragile shield against the encroaching dread, but I couldn't shake the feeling that only Elena, with her eyes that held the wisdom of generations, could truly shed light on the darkness that was consuming our village.

She sat by the hearth, her gnarled hands clasped, her gaze fixed on the flickering flames as if reading prophecies within them. Her face, usually etched with a gentle kindness, was drawn taut, her lips pressed into a thin line. I held out the key, its bronze surface dull in the dim light, a silent testament to the terror it had unleashed.

"Elena," I began, my voice rough, "I found this. By the river. And since then… everything has changed."
