The air in the forest had always held a certain stillness, a quiet reverence that settled over the ancient trees like a shroud. But tonight, it was a different kind of silence, one that prickled the skin and tightened the chest. Even the persistent chirping of crickets seemed muted, as if holding their breath. I clutched the key in my pocket, its cold, intricate metal a stark contrast to the warmth of my hand, a constant reminder of the unsettling path I’d been forced onto. The whispers, they’d grown bolder, no longer just fleeting murmurs on the edge of hearing. They slithered through the rustling leaves, weaving themselves into the very fabric of my thoughts, insidious and undeniably present.

Mateo’s skepticism, once a comforting anchor, had frayed. His eyes, usually so steady, now darted into the shadows, a flicker of fear replacing his usual wry amusement. He’d seen it too, or at least, he’d felt it. The way the shadows deepened unnaturally, the sudden chill that descended even on a warm evening, the unsettling feeling of being watched by something ancient and unseen. Elena, her face a map of worry lines deeper than usual, had offered cryptic warnings, her voice laced with a gravity I was only now beginning to comprehend. She knew, or suspected, more than she let on, her knowledge a heavy burden she carried with a stoic grace that was both admirable and terrifying.

I’d been drawn back to the riverbank, to the place where the current had smoothed the stones and where, a week ago, my life had irrevocably shifted. The moon, a sliver of bone against the bruised twilight sky, cast long, distorted shadows that danced with a life of their own. The water, usually a soothing murmur, now seemed to hiss, its surface disturbed by unseen currents. It was then, as I stood by the gnarled roots of the old willow, that the whispers coalesced, no longer diffuse but focused, like a single, chilling breath directed at me.
