The silence in my small cottage, once a comforting blanket woven from the chirping crickets and the distant murmur of the river, had become a suffocating shroud. It was a silence that pulsed, a pregnant pause before a scream. Since that day by the water, since the moment my fingers closed around the cold, intricate metal of the key, my home had been transformed into a stage for the unseen.

It began subtly, as these things always do, I suppose. A rustle of nonexistent fabric in the corner of my eye, a fleeting chill that had nothing to do with the mountain air seeping through the cracks in the window frames. Mateo, ever the pragmatist, had initially dismissed it as my imagination running wild, fueled by fear and too many late nights poring over forbidden texts in Elena’s dusty study. But even Mateo, with his stubborn refusal to acknowledge anything beyond the tangible, had started to falter.

Tonight, the whispers were not confined to the periphery. They were in the very bones of the cottage, seeping from the rough-hewn timber walls, coiling out of the shadows that clung to the corners like damp moss. They were not words, not exactly, but a symphony of hushed, sibilant sounds, a thousand tiny voices murmuring secrets I couldn’t quite decipher, yet felt deep within my marrow. It was as if the house itself was breathing, its lungs filled with spectral sighs.
