Chapter 4
Ancient Echoes
Dr. Aris Thorne, uncovers ancient texts describing a catastrophic event linked to La Garita's last awakening, the mid-tertiary 'Igpnimbrite Flare up which lasted from 25 to 40 million years ago generating many supervolcanic eruptions in Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. He then calls his son Jeremiah who has returned to YVO after being told to leave the area around LA Garita Caldera. 5000 words
The air in Dr. Aris Thorne’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something akin to ozone, a faint metallic tang that seemed to cling to the very dust motes dancing in the weak morning light. He hunched over a brittle parchment, its surface a labyrinth of faded ink and cryptic symbols. For weeks, he’d been immersed in the translated fragments of the ‘Whispers of the Deep Earth,’ a collection of proto-linguistic texts unearthed from a forgotten Andean monastery. Most of it was poetic, allegorical, but a recurring passage had begun to prickle at his scientific intuition.
"The Great Ignimbrite Flare," he murmured, tracing a finger over a particularly jagged glyph. "It wasn't just a geological event. It was… a symphony of destruction."
The texts spoke of a time when the earth itself seemed to breathe fire, when vast plains ignited and the sky wept ash. The dates, when pieced together with painstaking effort, aligned with the geological record of the mid-Tertiary period, a span Aris knew intimately. The ‘Ignimbrite Flare-up,’ a period of intense volcanism that had reshaped landscapes across what would become Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, had always been understood as a series of massive, but discrete, eruptions. These ancient scribes, however, painted a different picture. They described an ongoing, terrifying resonance, a sustained eruption of unimaginable scale.
