The earth groaned, a guttural rumble that began deep within its molten heart and clawed its way to the surface. It wasn’t the sharp, percussive crack of a fault line giving way, but a prolonged, sickening heave, like a wounded titan shifting in its sleep. In the already fractured landscape surrounding the Wah Wah Springs caldera, the tremor was amplified. Dust, a fine, ochre powder that had settled like a shroud after the initial ignimbrite flare-up at La Garita, was ripped from its repose, billowed into the air, and mingled with the acrid scent of sulfur.
Sarah, her face streaked with grime, pressed herself against the pitted basalt of a collapsed lava tube. The ground beneath her feet vibrated with an unnerving intensity, a frantic pulse that echoed the frantic thumping of her own heart. Beside her, Dr. Aris Thorne, his usual scientific detachment frayed at the edges, scanned the horizon with a handheld seismograph, its needle dancing a frantic jig.
“It’s… it’s not just La Garita,” Aris rasped, his voice hoarse. “The seismic activity is… it’s spreading. Look!” He gestured with a trembling hand towards the north.
