The air in the narrow crevice was thick with the scent of salt and damp earth, a primal perfume that clung to Maya’s skin. Above, the sky was a bruised purple, the last vestiges of daylight struggling to penetrate the encroaching gloom. She traced the rough, moss-slicked stone with trembling fingers, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. This was it. The final hurdle. The map had led her here, to this formidable wall of rock that seemed to swallow the fading light.
Beside her, a shadow detached itself from the deeper darkness. Captain Silas Blackwood. He moved with a predator’s silent grace, his eyes, even in the dimness, glinting with an unnerving intensity. He’d been a constant, unwelcome presence since she’d left the familiar paths of her town, a phantom dogging her every step, his motives as murky as the sea during a storm.
"Impressive, isn't it?" Silas’s voice, a low rumble, cut through the tense quiet. He gestured towards the sheer rock face. "The locals call it the Serpent's Tooth. Legend says only the truly desperate, or the truly foolhardy, dare to pass."
