Chapter 16
Makeover
As Evelyn stepped out of the dingy hotel room, she took a deep breath, inhaling the unfamiliar scents of her new world. The bustling streets of New York City in the midst of Prohibition were a far cry from the manicured lawns and opulent ballrooms she had left behind. With her suitcase full of cash and jewels hidden safely under her bed, she felt a mix of excitement and trepidation as she embarked on her first day in this new life.

The cacophony of languages swirling around her was a comfort; she could pick out snippets of Italian, Yiddish, and Chinese, reminding her that she wasn't the only one seeking a fresh start in this melting pot of a city.
As an accomplished artist, Evelyn's keen eye was drawn to the vibrant street art and colorful advertisements plastered on buildings. She found herself itching to capture the raw energy of the city on canvas, a stark contrast to the stuffy portraits and landscapes she had been forced to paint in her previous life.
