The chandeliers in the Grand Ballroom of the Astor Court seemed to cast a harsher light than usual on the assembled guests. It was the annual Charity Gala, the peak of the season, and the air thrummed with the familiar, suffocating blend of old money condescension and the sharp, ambitious scent of the newly rich who were desperate to buy their way into the same gilded circles. They recognized the quality of her jewels, the cut of her gowns—each piece bespoke, often designed by Anya herself, though the sketches were always casually dismissed as 'charming imports'—but they could not place her provenance. She was new, and therefore, suspect.
