Atlanta’s humid breath, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and blooming jasmine, seeped through the cracked window of my makeshift studio – a corner of my cramped apartment I’d painstakingly soundproofed with old egg cartons and a prayer. Tonight, the rhythm was different. It wasn’t just a beat; it was a lifeline, a desperate plea hurled into the universe, begging for an escape.

My fingers danced across the keyboard, coaxing melodies from the digital ether. Each note was a brick, laid with careful precision, building a fortress against the encroaching darkness of my reality. The lyrics tumbled out, raw and unfiltered, a confession whispered to the night. They spoke of the concrete jungle that threatened to swallow me whole, the siren song of the streets that had held me captive for too long, and the flickering ember of hope that refused to be extinguished.

“Yeah, that’s the one, Kong,” a voice murmured from the shadows. Jamaica. She was always there, a silent observer, her presence a calming balm to my restless spirit. She sat on the edge of my battered couch, her silhouette framed by the dim glow of the streetlights filtering through the window. Her eyes, even in the low light, held a depth that always made me feel seen, truly seen, for the first time in what felt like forever.
