The Crossroads
The heat is on. Kong is forced to choose: dive deeper into the street life to shield his friends, or risk everything for a chance at escape. Mark's shadow looms, a constant reminder of the danger.
The air in the Atlanta night hung thick and heavy, like a humid blanket that refused to lift. It was the kind of night that clung to your skin, making every breath a conscious effort. I was sitting on the stoop of Crash’s crib, the chipped paint cool beneath my worn-out jeans, the distant wail of a siren a familiar lullaby. My guitar case, battered and bearing the scars of countless late-night practices, leaned against my leg. It felt like a shield, a promise, and a burden all at once.
Crash and Chris were inside, their voices a low rumble that occasionally spiked into laughter or a sharp disagreement. I tried to tune them out, to let the music in my head take over. I’d been working on a new track, a melody that felt like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. Jamaica had heard a snippet of it last week, her eyes lighting up with a genuine excitement that made my chest ache. She saw something in me, something beyond the grime and the hustle, something I was desperately trying to hold onto myself.
“Yo, Kong! You out here contemplating the universe again?” Crash’s voice boomed, shattering my concentration. He stepped out onto the porch, a grin plastered across his face, Chris trailing behind him, his expression as unreadable as ever.
