The air in the alley behind "The Spot" was thick enough to chew, a potent cocktail of stale beer, desperation, and something vaguely metallic that always made my stomach clench. It was the smell of *this* life, the one I was trying so hard to outrun, clinging to me like cheap cologne. Crash, all swagger and restless energy, paced the grimy concrete like a caged lion, his eyes darting from the shadows to the flickering neon sign of the bar. Chris, ever the picture of cool calculation, leaned against a dented dumpster, a half-smile playing on his lips as he watched Crash’s theatrics.

“Yo, Kong,” Crash finally barked, his voice a rumble that vibrated through the damp air. “You ain’t gonna just stand there lookin’ like you about to drop a tear, are ya? This ain’t no open mic night.”

I forced a smile, trying to shake off the knot of unease that had been tightening in my chest all night. “Just soaking in the ambiance, man. Real inspiring stuff.”
