The stale air in the studio always smelled like ambition and desperation, a potent cocktail that Kong had grown accustomed to. Tonight, it was particularly thick, clinging to him like a second skin. He strummed a chord, a mournful, bluesy thing, and the sound vibrated through the worn wood of his guitar, a familiar comfort in the swirling chaos of his mind. Crash and Chris were out there, somewhere, doing whatever it was they did that kept them tethered to the gutter. Kong, meanwhile, was trying to build a bridge out of it, one note at a time.

He’d been trying to nail this melody for days, a song about the feeling of being caught between two worlds, the one he knew and the one he craved. It was a delicate balance, like walking a tightrope over a pit of vipers. And right now, the vipers seemed to be winning. Mark’s name had been whispered around like a curse, a shadow lengthening over their little corner of Atlanta. Crash and Chris, bless their reckless hearts, saw it as a challenge. Kong saw it as a death knell for his dreams.

He closed his eyes, letting the music take over. The lyrics were still hazy, fragments of thoughts and feelings he couldn’t quite articulate. He needed something more, something real to pour into the song. He needed Jamaica.
