Confronted by the near-fatal consequences, Kong finally sees the dead end of the street life. Crash and Chris are shaken, but their old habits die hard.

The siren’s wail, a mournful, desperate cry, still echoed in my ears, a phantom limb of sound that refused to detach itself from my consciousness. It had been hours since the flashing blue and red lights had finally faded, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier, more suffocating, than any noise. The air in Crash’s apartment, usually thick with the stale scent of weed and desperation, now reeked of something else – fear. And maybe, just maybe, a tiny, almost imperceptible whiff of regret.

Crash sat slumped on the threadbare couch, his usual swagger replaced by a defeated slump. His eyes, usually burning with a restless fire, were dull, unfocused, staring at a spot on the grimy carpet as if it held the secrets of the universe. Chris, ever the pragmatist, was pacing, his movements jerky, like a caged animal. He’d been muttering to himself, a low, continuous stream of curses and what-ifs, punctuated by frustrated sighs.

And me? I was perched on the edge of a wobbly kitchen chair, the one with the permanently loose leg that always threatened to give way. My hands were clasped so tightly my knuckles were white, my breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The image of that car, mangled and smoking, replayed itself behind my eyelids with sickening clarity. The sound of metal groaning, the shattering glass, the… the *silence* that followed. It was a silence that screamed louder than any explosion.
