The humid Atlanta air hung thick and heavy, like a wet blanket on a summer night, but tonight, it felt like a shroud. I was perched on a fire escape two blocks down, the brick rough against my palms, my heart doing a frantic drum solo against my ribs. Below, under the sickly yellow glow of a flickering streetlamp, Crash and Chris were walking into it. Walking, like lambs to the slaughter, with that same swagger that always made my stomach clench. They thought they were the wolves, the apex predators of these concrete jungles, but tonight, they were just bait.

It was a constant reminder of the life I was supposed to be building, the one that felt a million miles away from this sticky, dangerous present. Jamaica. Her face flashed in my mind, her gentle smile, the way she’d looked at me like I was more than just another lost soul in this city. She’d talked about open mic nights, about studios, about a life where the only risks were hitting a wrong note. But Crash and Chris, they were the anchor, the chains that kept me tethered to the pavement.
