A Glimmer of Escape

The humid Atlanta air hung heavy, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and something vaguely floral, like jasmine trying its best to fight through the grime. I was sitting on the stoop of Crash and Chris’s place, the chipped paint digging into my jeans, a half-eaten bag of chips balanced precariously on my knee. The sun was starting its slow descent, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange, the kind of sky that made you feel like something significant was about to happen, or maybe it was just the heat playing tricks on my eyes.

Jamaica was perched on the curb across the street, her silhouette sharp against the fading light. We’d been talking, or rather, she’d been talking and I’d been absorbing, like a sponge that had been left out in the sun and was just begging for a drop of cool water. She’d been telling me about her cousin, a guy named Andre. Andre, who used to run with a crowd that sounded a lot like mine, a crowd that lived by the hustle, by the quick buck and the even quicker glance over the shoulder. But Andre, Jamaica had said, had one day just… stopped. Packed his bags, left the corner, and started something new. A small business, fixing up old cars. Turns out, he was good with his hands, real good. So good, in fact, that now he had a whole garage, a couple of mechanics working for him, and a life that didn’t involve looking over his shoulder every five seconds.

“He just… decided,” Jamaica had said, her voice soft but firm, like a steady beat under a chaotic melody. “He was tired, Kong. Tired of the noise, tired of the fear. He said one morning he woke up and realized he was more scared of staying than of leaving.”
