Chapter 13: Whispers and Lies

The humid Atlanta air hung thick and heavy, like a damp blanket draped over the city. It clung to everything, to the peeling paint of the corner store, to the exhaust fumes that coughed from passing cars, and to the gnawing unease that had taken root in my gut. I sat on the cracked concrete steps of Crash’s apartment building, my guitar case leaning against my leg like a silent, dusty companion. The late afternoon sun, a hazy orange orb, cast long, distorted shadows that stretched and writhed across the pavement, mirroring the twisted thoughts churning in my head.

Crash and Chris were inside, as usual. Their voices, a low rumble punctuated by bursts of laughter, drifted through the open window. It was the kind of sound that used to feel like home, like the steady beat of my own heart. Now, it sounded…off. Like a record skipping, a melody gone sour.
