The bioma war was over. That was what they said on the screens in the common room, the same screens that had once flickered with the orange and pink of old revolutions. Now they showed a calm, synthetic green, a landscape that had never existed. Andžela sat on the edge of her cot, the scarf—her grandmother’s scarf, the one with the threads of rust and violet—wrapped around her shoulders. It was too warm for it, but she didn’t care. The air in the dormitory smelled of recycled breath and the faint, metallic tang of the cleaning solution they used on the floors.

Bruno was gone. He had been gone for three days, taken in the night by the men in the clean white suits. They said it was for “recalibration,” a word that sounded like a lie wrapped in a prayer. Andžela had not cried. She had learned, forty years ago, that crying did not fill a stomach or warm a bed. But she had held the scarf tighter, and she had waited.

Now, a new woman sat on the cot next to hers. She was young, maybe twenty, with hair the color of dried corn and eyes that darted like moths. She wore a thin dress, the same shade of institutional beige as the walls. Her name was Margarita, and she had arrived with nothing but a small cloth bag and a story about a vampire.
