Bruno had found me in the courtyard of the old hotel, the one that had once been a prison for revolutionaries, then a refuge for those who had nowhere else to go. The walls still wept salt from the tears of men who had been shot at dawn. Now they wept for us, two teenagers who carried our own invisible chains.
“Look,” he said, holding up a bundle of yarn the color of a dying rose. “Your grandmother’s ghost sent it.”
